Steph and I met on the first day of school at Southend High School, seated next to each other because our surnames began with “L” and “M.” It was a simple twist of fate that placed us side by side, but from that moment on, we became inseparable, and our friendship only grew stronger over the years.

When I moved in 1988 to Fort Worth, Texas, to marry JW, distance never weakened our friendship. We made it a point to speak, to Skype, to stay connected every week without fail. Through every joy and every sorrow, we were each other’s constant. When my beloved husband passed away at the end of 2023, Steph, despite battling a serious illness herself, was there, comforting, encouraging, and offering her unwavering support. That was Steph – always thinking of others, always giving, even when she had so little strength to spare. I truly hope I was there for her as she battled her illness for three years.

I treasure the countless times we shared, and they still bring a smile to my face when I think of them. We laughed until we cried more times than I can remember. We knew each other so well that sometimes no words were necessary; we knew exactly what the other person was thinking, and we could even finish each other’s sentences. We loved to go shopping together and both had an inherent love for fashion, although my style was a little more flamboyant than Steph’s.

When we graduated from high school and both started working in London, we would travel on the train together from Southend to London and back again. At age 17, we went on vacation to Israel, fell in love with the country, and then returned to spend six unforgettable months at Kibbutz Maayan Zvi. Steph emigrated to Israel one year after I did, and we lived together in Ramat Gan, sharing hopes, dreams, and countless cups of tea — until the day Ami came into her life and swept her off her feet.

Even though we ended up living miles away from each other, we always found ways to reunite, to travel, and to create new memories. Steph and Ami were always the masterminds behind our trips, planning every detail with enthusiasm and a love for life that was contagious. We were lucky just to show up and tag along. Together, we explored Mexico, Spain, South Africa, Alaska, and so many other places — each journey filled with laughter, discovery, and joy. Although I must confess that keeping up with Steph and Ami’s energy was often a challenge for us.

It’s hard to put into words how much I miss Steph. She was not just a friend; she was a part of me. Her kindness, her humor and her wisdom left an indelible mark on me and everybody lucky enough to know or cross paths with her.

Thank you, Steph, for being the best friend anyone could ever wish for. Your love, your laughter, and your beautiful spirit will always live on. You are deeply loved, sorely missed, and will never ever be forgotten.

Remembering Stephanie – By Sylvia Hill How do you even start to write about a friendship that spanned more than sixty years?
