This nature landscape exhibition beautifully reflects and captures a wide array of the natural world, drawn from her many travels around the globe.

Stephanie was born on August 6, 1953, in London, as the only child of her parents. In 1973, she arrived in Israel as a volunteer for six months, and a year later, in 1974, she made Aliyah purely out of Zionism. In Israel, she met her husband Ami, and together they developed a love and passion for traveling around the world. Stephanie documented these magical, once-in-a-lifetime moments through her photography, while Ami planned their next adventure.

Landscape photography is one of those types of photography that we all do all the time, on every trip, both in Israel and abroad. Yet, landscape photography is one of the most challenging types of photography to execute in a high-quality and interesting manner. However, Stephanie, with her artistic inclinations, was able to use the medium of photography to offer viewers a visual journey through nature, serving as an important reminder of the beauty and magic of landscapes.

In the exhibition “Around the World I,” eleven works have been carefully selected from thousands of landscape photographs taken by Stephanie, reflecting a small portion of the places she visited with Ami.

“Stephanie always said that photography is like painting in terms of composition. She had a natural sense of identifying special views and capturing fleeting moments of moving objects that disappeared within seconds but remained in the photograph. Additionally, she had the ability to scan her surroundings and spot situations, people, or animals that most people would miss. She knew how to photograph still objects like rocks, trees, and plants, combining them in a way that the resulting image looked like a wonderful painting of nature,” said Ami Cohen.

Stephanie passed away from cancer in March 2024 after a battle with the illness for over three years.
In the end, there remains a long list of today,

I am going to tell you soon about my wife Stephanie, who passed away this year. I named my speech: “Stephanie Cohen – A Portrait of an Artist, Photographer and World Explorer”. I will explain soon.

Firstly, I am very excited to see so many family members, friends, acquaintances, Mr. Mayor of Bay-Yam Tzvika Brot and also other guests that came this evening for a double event: The first, the opening of the exhibition of Stephanie’s wonderful photos that finally are being displayed to the public and show her gifted photographic skill, and the second but not less important, the inauguration of the Gallery named after her on her birthday.

Before I begin telling you about Stephanie, I would like to thank first and foremost the amazing Ania, the Chief Executive Office of the “Design Terminal Bat-Yam” who enabled this exhibition to become a reality and also suggested naming this gallery after Stephanie. To the one and only Ilana, the gallery curator who chose the photos, designed the gallery space and wrote the texts, and lastly, my dear cousin Ariel who volunteers on the Board of Directors of the “OUTBOX” charity. He was the one who came up with the idea for this photo exhibition and thanks to him the connection between me and Ania was established.

As mentioned in the invitation, this will be the first of a trilogy of exhibitions and up to five annual exhibitions covering different subjects from the beautiful vast collection of her photographs.

As most of you know, Stephanie and I liked very much to travel around the world and “explore” countries, people and remote tribes at the end of the world. I emphasise the word “discover” because we were very curious about any place we travelled to, and wanted to see and learn more about the lives of the people in the most remote and exotic locations. From the start, it became obvious that Stephanie was a very naturally gifted photographer and so her photos are so special with a “Wow” element. She was very quick in identifying this moment of a person, an animal or a natural phenomenon (lightning, waves breaking on rocks etc.) that appeared only for a split-second but was captured in her camera or cellular phone.

Stephanie had a unique quality: on every trip, she took a lot of photos (even before the digital era). Therefore, looking at old albums and later at digital ones, one can get a detailed account of every trip we did. Later, using digital cameras & cellular phones, she took thousands of excellent photos that were saved on the computer and also uploaded to Google Photos by yours truly…

We travelled to many conventional places but went also to quite challenging remote locations without electricity or running water.

In Australia we flew in a helicopter over the Great Barrier Reef and landed on a floating platform in the middle of the Coral Sea, in New Zealand we landed on a glacier, in Brazil we flew over the Iguazu Falls, in Hawaii over active volcanoes, in Canada we boarded a seaplane that took off, flew and landed on the water, in Papua New Guinea we visited remote tribes in small planes that landed on grass strips with no control tower. We visited Patagonia, Easter Island, Galapagos Islands, South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Japan, India and many other places. We sailed on the Mississippi, The Amazon, the Mekong, the Yangtse, the Zambezi Rivers and more. In all of these places, Steph took thousands of high-quality photos.

Stephanie looked delicate and not physically strong but, in times of complicated situations she was cool and collected, tough and courageous and so managed to overcome obstacles during some of our trips that most people wouldn’t have even considered doing. A few examples: we visited one of the notorious favelas in Rio de Janeiro (one of many shantytowns that are also frequently crime-ridden and usually dominated by gangs dealing in illegal drug trafficking. Police presence is mostly non existant).

We sailed in a Zodiac inflatable speedboat some 20 km in each direction in the rough Pacific Ocean along the coast of Hawaii to watch the lava erupting from an active volcano spilling into the ocean.

In Canada, we sailed in a small boat to watch Grey whales, and there were more adventures but I don’t have enough time to tell about them…

I must add one small but important note in this regard: Stephanie suffered from nausea and seasickness frequently when sailing in the sea and flying in small planes, but she did all the things I have described and more (sometimes with the aid of nausea medications…) and was ready for the next chapter of our trip!

She loved and valued beauty or something special and unique: a landscape, a person, an animal, a historic building or an architectonically unique building and knew how to find the perfect shooting angle. But since she loved to document every interesting thing she saw, she also took pictures that can be described as “hard to watch” such as burning bodies in India, mummies in their clothes in open graves in Peru, monks’ skulls piled in churches, people in very poor villages in Asia, Africa Mexico and more. Furthermore, the two of us had a strong desire to know and understand how the natives in many countries live while respecting their customs and religions, so we were always interested in talking to them, visiting their houses when possible and also in their temples and shrines and eating not-so-conventional foods.

Stephanie preferred to buy ethnic art artefacts (statues, tribal masks, pottery etc.) directly from the natives everywhere we went (Papua New Ginea, tribes in the Amazon, Mexico, Peru, Easter Island, Australian Aborigines, Masai in Zanzibar, Native Americans, New Zealand Māori and more. Our flat looks like a museum…

Elephants were her favourite animal. We saw them on our safaris in South Africa and Botswana. That is why she bought many decorative elephants in all sizes, colours, and materials imaginable. There are over 80 of them in our flat.

Stephanie also loved to paint with acrylic colours on canvas and her paintings adorn our flat to this day. When people requested to buy some of her paintings, she declined the offers because she couldn’t part with them…

And now I would like to tell you how, in a very unexpected turn of life, the venue we are now is connected miraculously with Stephanie: part of the Design Terminal Bat-Yam objectives is to create special synergy through the “OUTBOX” charity between the independent designers of the “Greenhouse” and the rehabilitation workshops for people with psychosocial disabilities, with the help of volunteers.

Stephanie was employed in GKH law firm and also operated and managed the volunteering activity there mainly by assisting the Tel Aviv municipality family club for children at risk in Yad Eliyahu neighbourhood. Instead of moving the children out of their homes, the club forms a substitute and operates from after school hours until 7 pm five days a week. The children receive hot meals, enriching education, help in doing homework and more. She was active in several areas: Firstly, helping the kids do their Math and English homework, Secondly, recruiting office employees and managing their roster in the club, and also raising money to be allocated in the law office’s yearly budget to be used in addition to Tel Aviv Municipality funds. The office funds were used for trips, educational shows, improving the physical conditions in the club and bringing the kids to the law office for Purim parties and other celebrations.

Stephanie’s volunteering activity was from 2004 to 2020. She retired in 2013 but continued to be active in the club. She came on her initiative and free time until 2020 (when the COVID pandemic broke out). During that time she succeeded in acquiring additional funding for the club by “pulling strings” in GKH law office even though she was already retired from the office.

She loved helping colleagues at work. She was a sort of “Wailing Wall” for quite some people who used to come to her office and tell her about their problems.

She also assisted friends and other people who had some mental issues, some of them quite serious, for a long time.

And another small fact that also has some bearing on the Design Terminal: our first apartment, after we got married, was in Bat-Yam…

Some biographical facts about Stephanie:

She was born in London and was an only child. She had a very happy childhood growing up with her family. She joined Marks & Spenser’s head office at the age of 16. She advanced very rapidly and was promoted at quite a young age to become a menswear fashion buyer. She loved her job which combined some of her favourite things: fashion, textiles, clothes and colours.

She came to Israel, with her best friend Sylvia, as a volunteer in Kibbutz Maayan Tzvi for six months. After returning to England the Yom Kippur War broke out. After the war, Stephanie made Aliyah in April 1975. She was a real Zionist.

She started working soon after her Aliyah in the Israel General Bank Tel Aviv branch. We met there and never parted ever since…

After our wedding in 1977, one of us had to leave work at the bank because the bank policy didn’t allow married people to work at the same branch. Therefore, Stephanie started working as a secretary in a company that imported electronic parts. In 1986 she moved to Kleinhendler Halevi law firm as a secretary. Her job expanded gradually as her bosses recognised her capabilities. She became the office manager but also dealt with invoicing and bill collection, personal assistant to the managing partner and even did some planning regarding office renovations…In 2001 her office merged with Gross Law Firm to become GKH Law Firm and one of Israel’s largest law firms.

Her capabilities were quickly recognized in the new office and she was promoted to become the office marketing manager and conference organizer. And, as I mentioned before, she managed and directed the office volunteering project of the Tel Aviv Club for children at risk.

Stephanie was loved by all who knew her. She could connect with different people in character and areas of interest. She had a wonderful sense of humour and didn’t have an ounce of jealousy.
